Hong Kong International Airport has cancelled all of its departing flights for Aug. 12, the fourth day of the airport’s occupation by nearly 5,000 protesters.
HKG officials cited “seriously disrupted” operations as the reason for the cancellations, advising travellers to leave the facility as soon as possible and to consult with their airlines regarding rescheduled flights. All outbound flights as of 3:30 p.m. were cancelled.
Arriving flights already heading into Hong Kong would still be allowed to land, officials said.
The protests, which originally began as a demonstration against a proposed extradition bill that would see criminal suspects tried in mainland China, have increasingly targeted the use of force by Hong Kong police in handling the demonstrations.
The airport is one of the world’s busiest, seeing nearly 73 million passengers annually and connecting to more than 220 destinations around the globe; last year, the airport welcomed more than 400,000 flights.
