There’s lots to come in 2018 from Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, following a pair of high-profile appointments within the company this spring.

The airline welcomed Air Canada staff and members of the travel trade at an exclusive gathering to welcome Duncan Bureau and John MacLeod – president of Air Canada Rouge and vice-president, global sales and alliances of Air Canada, respectively – to their new roles.

Coincidentally, both Bureau and MacLeod previously worked at WestJet and prior to that, both worked together at the now-defunct Canadian Airlines.

Bureau, who was appointed president of Air Canada Rouge in early May, told PAX:

“There’s lots happening at Rouge. We’ll be 53 aircraft this summer and we continue to add markets. Last week, we added Zagreb, Porto and Romania. It’s been an exciting transition so far. I’ve had the opportunity to be at a senior level in a lot of different areas but not operations,” Bureau said. “I’m learning a ton from our chief pilot and spending a lot of time with our head of operations and head of airports. These are new areas for me – I’m very familiar with the commercial side – and what I bring from the Air Canada side is those internal relationships at Air Canada.”

Importance of the trade

MacLeod joined Air Canada in 2017 as vice-president, commercial strategy, following a tenure with Virgin America.

In addition to working with the alliances and joint venture team (recently resulting in a new joint venture with Air China, as well as the A++ transatlantic joint venture with Lufthansa and United), MacLeod will have overall responsibility for the airline's revenues generated across sales channels from all global points of sale and for sales distribution strategies worldwide.

To that end, he told told PAX that the travel trade is crucial to Air Canada’s ongoing expansion plans.

“What we’ve realized that to support our goal of becoming a top 10 global airline, the relationships we have with travel trade are incredibly important both here in Canada and around the world,” MacLeod said.
