WestJet increases cost for pet travel, and not everyone is happy

WestJet increased its cabin and hold rates for animal transfers earlier this month, a move that has led to a 76,000-person strong protest online.

A Change.org petition was created after WestJet increased its fees on Dec. 3rd for carrying pets in both the cabin and baggage compartment of its aircrafts.

The petition to fight the price increase, as of today (Dec. 19),  has garnered more than 76,000 signatures

In a statement emailed to PAX, WestJet spokesperson Lauren Stewart said the pricing changes were made to “better align with industry standards and to offset WestJet’s higher costs in today’s challenging and competitive markets.”

No changes to cabin costs

Stewart reiterated that there has been no change to fees for pets travelling in the cabin between or within Canada and the U.S. and that “our fees remain lower than our Canadian competitors’ for animals in hold.”

The highest spike in WestJet’s fees is seen in travel between Canada and destinations outside of the U.S. for furry friends in hold — a $125 increase from $75 — as outlined in this chart provided by WestJet.
