The 2014 ‘Discovering Thailand’ festival kicked off with an exclusive luncheon reception for travel media at the Royal Thai Consulate- General’s residence in Vancouver yesterday.
Consul- General Sutthiluck Sa-ngarmangkang, Thailand’s first female appointment in Vancouver, welcomed guests with traditional Thai dancing performances, followed by a fashion-show and a Thai cooking demonstration by top chefs, which were a sneak-preview of tourist events to come this weekend in the city.
The media reception was the first in a series to mark the annual ‘Discovering Thailand’ festival, which runs from Aug. 22-24 in Vancouver.
Sa-ngarmangkang said that the festival honors the Queen of Thailand’s birthday this month, and the fashion show performance was to acknowledge Queen Sirikit’s development of Thai fashions, which are marketed internationally.
Festival events begin with a Muay Thai dance and ‘Amazing Thailand Exhibition’ at the Vancouver Playhouse on Friday Aug. 22, followed by activities running through the weekend at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
On the line-up are Thai Boxing, or ‘Muay Thai’ demonstrations, the traditional Thai martial art, cultural performances and the formal Thai National Costume Fashion Show.
The festival moves on to Victoria on Aug. 25 and to Edmonton on Aug. 28.
