When it opens on Dec. 20, 2019, Nayara Tented Camp will be one of the first luxury camps in Central America. The property will feature 18 luxury tents; 12 of them will be mirror image tents linked together to create a spectacular two bedroom unit that can accommodate two couples or a couple and four children.

The most exciting part of the camp are the private tents; set high on the hill and with spectacular views of the Arenal Volcano, the luxury air-conditioned tents feature a signature plunge pool fed with natural hot springs, an outdoor shower, wooden floors, a four-posted bed with a canopy, and a spacious bathroom with an oversized tub.

Eco-friendly, luxury lodging

Located in the Arenal Volcano National Park, the year-round camp is the brainchild of owner Leo Ghitis who was inspired by the luxury canvas lodges of Africa and Asia. The low-impact, high-yield design that immerses guests in the surrounding rainforest was developed by Luxury Frontiers, an experiential lodging expert with a global portfolio of design projects that extends from Mexico and Tuscany to Botswana.

The 29 air-conditioned accommodations, each generously sized at 1,496 square feet, have been built at a higher altitude on the hillside to provide unobstructed views of the volcano. Multigenerational travellers and like-minded groups can opt for a set of two identical tents that connect with a covered passageway while couples and privacy-seeking guests can book standalone units.

About the camp

Also dotted around two acres of rainforest at the peak of the mountain are seven interconnecting, private hot springs that can be enjoyed by six to 15 nature lovers. Rates start at $1,200 per night.

The indoor/outdoor design of the camp blends contemporary, barefoot-luxe touches and unique-to-location design features: a master suite created as a nod to traditional African safari style tents fused with a Costa Rican sense of place; canopy beds with a botanical headboard mural; private plunge pools fed by natural mineral hot springs; and double-head outdoor showers. The color palette aptly showcases tree bark tones, shades of green, and touches of leather. With the addition of the Camp, Nayara will consist of three properties, including Nayara Springs and Nayara Gardens, all of which are connected by footbridges.

The following amenities and experiences await guests of Nayara Tented Camp:

  • sloth sanctuary tours and early morning bird-watching walks with Nayara’s expert nature guide and ‘Sloth Concierge’ Juan Pablo
  • spas and pools
  • six restaurants
  • daily yoga and meditation above the trees
  • new espresso bar, Mi Cafecito, with bean-to-cup experiences
  • Arenal Volcano regional tours and hikes
