Essaouira is a breezy, laid-back port city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. A surfer's paradise for its strong trade winds and rolling waves, the sun-kissed beach town is often viewed as an alternative to the frenzy of busy Marrakesh.

The name Essaouira means “little picture” in Arabic, and picture-perfect is what you get: its blue-and-white “medina” (inner walled city), bordered by sandy-toned ramparts and stone gates (known as "babs") hums with picturesque, old-world tradition.
The seagulls in Essaouira are as big as your head and it wouldn't be unusual to see camels resting on the beach, as featured in today's PAX Pic of the Day.
