Okushu Tours, a TICO-certified tour operator based in Toronto, recently launched its small group tours to Peru, Japan, China, India, Thailand, South Africa, Vietnam and Cambodia. The company prides itself on providing experiences to exceptional destinations in groups no larger than 16.

“Based on our research, we are confident that today’s travellers still seek the safety and companionship of travelling in a group led by an experienced tour director without the structure,  and rigidity of traditional group travel," said Michael Yiptong, co-owner of Okushu Tours. “Our groups are limited to 16, not 20 not 24 which allows us to offer our guests the most immersive and authentic experience at destination."

The company is actively working with several Canadian airline partners to offer great value to guests by providing air-inclusive package tours to all eight destinations.

Small groups, big experiences

Okushu's tours can all be custom-made to tailor to guests preferences, whether that means more free time, or more immersion in the local culture. Travellers also get to choose from a series of included activities, not optional, meaning they don't have to pay extra. Guests stay in professionally-run accommodations, as opposed to homestays or shared stays.

Combined, the team behind Okushu Tours has travelled to several dozen countries, ranging everywhere from Argentina to Zimbabwe, said Lisa Lau, co-owner and managing director, Okushu Tours.

"Okushu Tours aims to carve a niche amongst Canadian travellers in the similar vein of going to your family-run neighbourhood restaurant for dinner instead of the big brand name chain restaurants," Lau explained.

At a group size of 16 or smaller, Okushu Tours' ground operation can be very nimble.  "We can join local festivals or community events on a whim, and our guests can experience the “unexpected”  and those are the memories they will bring home and share with their friends," Lau said. "Also, our expert local guides at destination, can walk our guests into local restaurants not book them into “group” restaurants. The local guide can lead the way onto public transportation when appropriate."
